When the Pediatric Development Center (PDC) closed on March 17, we had no way of knowing that the closure would be in effect for as long as it has. Since most businesses in Maryland are not yet allowed to reopen, we also have no way of knowing when PDC will be able to reopen its offices in Rockville and Silver Spring.

Given the importance of health safety for the population that we serve, PDC will not reopen until:

  • Other similar businesses re-open, including daycare centers, schools, and summer camps.
  • We have acquired an adequate supply of personal protection equipment and cleaning and sanitizing supplies to keep ourselves, our clients, the offices, and the supplies that we use clean.
  • We are able to implement policies and procedures that minimize risks.

We are currently providing teletherapy services for occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language therapy treatment sessions, and new client evaluations. The feedback PDC is receiving from families and therapists about the success of online services has been very positive and children continue to make progress toward their goals. As an added bonus, most health insurance companies now cover teletherapy sessions.

When PDC does reopen, there will of course be some necessary changes to client appointment times. While we understand that participating in teletherapy does not work for every family, those participating in weekly teletherapy appointments will have the option to keep the appointment time(s) they are currently scheduled for teletherapy sessions once PDC reopens. For example, if your child is being seen for teletherapy Mondays at 10:00, you will have the option to keep that time when PDC reopens its offices.

When PDC reopens we will most likely use a “hybrid model” of service delivery so that some appointments will be conducted in the office and some via teletherapy. This way families can make their own choice in regards to coming into the office for therapy. Given the advantages of teletherapy, PDC will most likely continue with this model of therapy intervention in the future.
