The Pediatric Development Center has grown into a unique place to receive coordinated speech-language, occupational, feeding and physical therapy services, but our founding and our mission are unique as well.
The Pediatric Development Center began with one simple statement, “I have an idea,” during a conversation between two friends – a speech-language pathologist and an occupational therapist – whose shared vision was to raise the standard of therapy in a private practice setting.
Through the years, Amy and Tracy stayed true to their philosophy of play-based practice as the scope of possibility unfolded. In the words of author, Kobi Yamada, What do you do with an idea? You love it, nurture it, allow others to embrace it and let it grow. Staying true to their philosophy and growing to meet changing needs, is the reason the Pediatric Development Center has become the place where everyone (children, families, staff) can discover what is possible.
Amy Wetherill, speech-language pathologist, was the first Certified Orofacial Myologist in Maryland. She specializes in the assessment and treatment of oral phase feeding disorders, oral coordination disorders and has a special interest guiding skill development through play. Amy is the current President of the American Academy of Private Practice in Speech Pathology and Audiology (AAPPSPA) and is a member of the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM) and the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). She has received the ASHA Award for Continuing Education (ACE) 6 times and has been published in the ASHA Leader magazine.
Tracy Wilson, SIPT (Sensory Integration) certified occupational therapist, is the co-founder of the Pediatric Development Center. She is a master in creating opportunities for children to expand their ideation, problem solving, motor and self-regulation skills and she promotes the importance of building a child’s intrinsic motivation for skill development. As a mentor to occupational therapists and graduate students and as a frequent presenter, Tracy teaches parents and other professionals the power and value of connection and formation of relationships in child development. Tracy is a member of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
